I said to myself this is the stuff of life..this is what I want for life messages…that youth take it on and expand it…express it… evolve it … own it… and that these students did!

When I laid eyes on the Empathy Experience art gallery installation at Milton Centre for the Arts by Trillium Demonstration School students, I felt like I showed up at a surprise party.

I had an inkling of what I would see in advance, but it wasn’t until my eyes saw the lights illuminating all of the carefully positioned life messages images I had taken of the students and their proud faces as they scurried around to their assigned ‘posts’ on gala night that it hit me and the adrenalin kicked in..fast!

I didn’t have long to linger as we were quickly escorted into another room for a presentation about the project.

The students took the lead. They swallowed their nerves and just went for it! What courage!

Each story-teller, presenter and song brought me to tears and made me think.

With every student who voiced, “My life message is…” another tear welled up in my eyes.

One after the other, they went on stage…my life message is…my life message is… my life message is…

I said to myself this is the stuff of life..this is what I want for life messages…that youth take it on and expand it…express it… evolve it… own it… and that these students did!

When we share our authentic and heartfelt stories and messages…we understand one another more…stereotypes break down and all that is left..all that exists is one human talking to another…sharing their gifts and we feel compassion and empathy.

It brings us together. It unifies us.

No matter how young or old…it can be done.

These young people are impacting all ages.

They are laying the foundation of their legacy.

They are courageous warriors who are now opening doors for themselves and welcoming others in…

And this my friends, is truly just the beginning.

I can feel it.
